Deer, eagle likely poisoned in Baraga County

Baraga, Michigan (AP) 4-09

Authorities are investigating the likely poisoning of a deer and a bald eagle in Baraga County.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said a conservation officer with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community recently found the dead animals lying close together.

The deer carcass had been laced with a highly toxic pesticide. Toxicology tests on the eagle are still pending.

Lt. Tim Robson says the DNR is working with other state and federal agencies to find out what happened.

Bald eagles were on the endangered species list for decades and remain protected by federal law.
