Shoshone-Bannock Tribes hold buffalo hunt

Jackson, Wyoming (AP) 5-09

The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes were conducting a ceremonial bison hunt on the National Elk Refuge during late April

The hunt was held on April 29 and 30th. This was the second year the tribes were holding a hunt on the refuge. Seventy tribal members killed seven bulls there last year.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had agreed last year to allow the tribes to kill five bulls but two more bulls were killed by mistake. The two extra bulls were taken off this year’s quota, leaving the tribes to kill three this year.

The tribes are located in southeastern Idaho, but are historically associated with the Jackson Hole area. They use the bison for food and for ceremonial purposes.
