Anglers kept away from Puyallup tribal fishermen

Tacoma, Washington (AP) 9-09

The Fish and Wildlife Department is closing access to the lower Puyallup River at times this month to prevent conflicts between anglers and tribal fishermen.

A policy coordinator for the department, Pat Pattillo, told The News Tribune of Tacoma that safety concerns were raised by reports of conflicts over gear and other incidents.

To ensure that the Puyallup Tribe and the state can conduct an orderly fishery, the river will be closed to recreational fishing Sept. 20-22 and Sept. 27-29.
