Biologists release salmon into Redfish Lake

Stanley, Idaho (AP) 9-09

About 450 adult sockeye salmon have been released into Redfish Lake in central Idaho as part of an attempt to restore migratory runs of the fish that has been teetering near extinction.

Altogether, federal, state and tribal officials hope to put about 1,200 adult sockeye into the lake this year, including about 600 fish that returned from the Pacific Ocean this summer.

The fish being released into the lake to spawn are a combination of captive broodstock reared at the Fish and Game’s Eagle Fish Hatchery in southwest Idaho and from a federal fish in Washington state, and fish that journeyed to the ocean and back.

Mike Peterson of Fish and Game says about 730 sockeye have returned this year from the ocean to fish traps on the Salmon River. Only four fish returned in 1991.
