Tribal mountain lion season ends with no cougars killed 7-07

NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) - A special mountain lion season on the Fort Berthold reservation has ended with no cougars killed, tribal officials say.

The temporary season opened in early June, after mountain lion sightings were reported. It covered the New Town, Four Bears, Shell Creek and Mandaree areas, and ended Sunday. A professional mountain lion hunter was brought in, but had no success.

A number of the mountain lion reports came from an area near a marina west of New Town that is near a walking path.

“We still have sightings over here by the marina. We had a couple last week,” Three Affiliated Tribes Game and Fish Director Fred Poitra said.

Poitra said the tribe might set up a trap in the area.

“We're just going to wait and see what's going on and if we have to act, we'll act,” he said.
