Becky Taylor from the Lac Courte Oreilles reserve in northwestern Wisconsin wants to prevent health problems before they emerge.

So she helped organized the "Women of Influence" late winter pow wow to honor women who have served the community by going back to school, quitting drinking or smoking or teaching traditional ways to youth.

More than 140 women were recognized. They received birch bark trays and flowers. The drummers received wild rice.

Rusty Barber served as the MC.  Paul DeMain gave the prayer in Ojibwe, and the cooks were Jeannie Miller, Patty Quaderer, Trina Starr, Melody Guibord, and Lisa Martin.

"Their spirits come alive because we dance for life."
