Fatal Accident on Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation

One person was killed, and two were injured in a high speed car accident on Highway K on the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Reservation, near the north end of Lac Courte Oreilles Lake at the junction with Trail End's Resort early Sunday evening. Two of the injured were airlifted to Duluth via helicopter. 

A passenger in the vehicle, 21 year-old Alexander M. Hartung of DeKalb, Illinois was killed in the accident

The Sawyer County Sheriff's Department reports in their preliminary release that a deputy on a  routine patrol headed (West) in the opposite direction that the car was headed (East), came upon the scene of the accident at 6:57 pm Sunday evening.  

Two other passengers,22-year-old Mark A. Rhine, of Buffalo Grove, Illinois, the driver of the car, and passenger Paul M. Mesher, 23 of Arlington Heights, Illinois were seriously injured. All three occupants were trapped in the vehicle.

Two occupants were transported by helicopter from the LCO Tribal School baseball field and taken to Duluth,  Minnesota hospitals. 

There have been other accidents near the scene of this crash, including one that killed a reservation woman, Deborah R. Floyd, 59, on Sept. 8 and an accident four years ago on the same stretch that took the lives of two LCO members, Autumn Miller-Jackson and her brother Mike Miller.
