Jacob White: Learning how to gather wild rice for his family

By Nick Vander Puy
Reserve, Wisconsin (IndianCountryTV)

During the third week of September Jacob White and his fellow students from the Lac Courte Oreilles School in northwestern Wisconsin went ricing on Pacwawong Lake near Seeley, Wisconsin.

The young people learned how to knock and push pole through the ripening wild rice beds. They learned how to balance with their instructors in a canoe.

A few of the young people fell into  the muck and river, but everybody got back in their boats safely and had a wonderful time.

The students returned to the LCO school to process the rice the traditional way by parching, jigging, and winnowing.

"We saw frogs today on the water!"
