Chris Smith: Wild rice season is just wonderful!

Chris Smith is a short and robust woman from Hayward, Wisconsin who resembles a hobbit character from J.R.R. Tolkein's, famous "Lord of the Rings."  Smith has a round, jovial face with slightly pointed elvin ears.

Hobbits are fond of an unadventurous bucolic life of gathering, farming, eating, and socializing, although they will defend their homes courageously, when called upon.

Learning rice planting and processing from her late  father Bud Smith (who often gave away rice and a recipe), every year she teams up with Paul Vallem to roast, thrash, and winnow thousands of pounds of brown, tan, and green wild rice.  More than two hundred Indian and non-Indian families are served.

This past fall was especially productive for ricers as it didn't rain or blow throughout the entire harvest.  Vallem and Smith processed three times as much rice as usual.
